Tidy Start Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 14, 2026
Tidy Start is a browser extension that replaces the New Tab page with a searchable view of your bookmarked favorites and browsing history. This page explains what data Tidy Start accesses and how it's used.
chrome.storage.sync. Tidy Start has no servers, no analytics, and no third-party
integrations of any kind.
What Tidy Start accesses, and why
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
bookmarks |
Reads your bookmarks so they can be displayed and searched as "favorites" on the new tab page. Also listens for bookmark deletions so Tidy Start can clean up its own local usage counters. |
history |
Reads your browsing history to power the searchable "recent history" panel. |
favicon |
Requests each site's icon so it can be shown next to its favorite or history entry. |
storage |
Stores your settings (theme, layout, section visibility) and how often you open each favorite through this page, so favorites can be ranked by actual use. |
scripting + optional host permission |
Off by default. Only used if you opt in, in Settings, to work around an organization policy that forces the browser's New Tab page to a specific URL. If you enable it, Tidy Start requests permission for that one site only and runs a small script there that immediately redirects the tab to Tidy Start — it does not read, modify, or transmit that site's content. |
What Tidy Start does not do
- It does not send any data to any server — Tidy Start has no backend of its own.
- It does not use analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party SDKs.
- It does not sell or share data with advertisers or any other party.
- It does not use cookies.
Where your data lives
Settings and usage counts are stored using chrome.storage.sync — the browser's own built-in
sync mechanism, the same one that already syncs your bookmarks and browser settings across your devices when
you're signed into your browser. This data is stored and synced by your browser vendor's own infrastructure
(Google, in Chrome, or Microsoft, in Edge), tied to your own browser profile. Tidy Start itself never
receives, stores, or has access to this data anywhere outside your browser.
